A wonder of modern science

The greatest invention of the twentieth century is the Computer. It is an electronic brain which can perform many tasks. It can interpret information very quickly. These are now a days used almost in every field like weather forecasting, entertainment, businesses, playing, design and in education. Computers have become so common. You can find these in schools, homes, hotels and offices at present.
Every computer has a keyboard which acts like a type writer. The monitor is like a TV screen on which can see. There are various software which can be used for various tasks. Introducing Internet through computer revolutionized the world of communications making it possible to communicate between computers located at different places within seconds.
It is now a network consisting of millions of computers. The internet is one of the most powerful technological advancements since the introduction of the desktop computer. Without knowledge of computer the life would be incomplete. That is why we should learn about computers.

Printers

The printers are used to get an hard copy output from a computer. There are three types of printers. They are;
  1. Ink – jet printers
  2. Dot- matrix printers
  3. Laser printers

The Dot – matrix printers use a ribbon and a printing head to produce a print out. We can get colour print outs using these printers.
Ink – jet printers print characters by spraying ink. Laser printers print characters and images using the laser technology and these laser printers print fast. As well as the quality of prints are very high. Today printers are used at schools, offices and homes.

Working of a Computer

There are thee basic operations of a computer. They are;
  1. Input
  2. Processing
  3. Output

To get our tasks done, we use input devices, processing devices and output devices.

What are Input Devices?
Input devices allow te user to give the command to the computer. There are commonly used input devices. Some of them are Keyboard, Mouse, Joysticks, Light pen, trackball, Microphones and Scanners. Keyboard is the main input device of a computer.

Keyboard
The keyboard is the most popular input device of a computer. Without a keyboard we cannot type letters. There are many special keys of a computer keyboard.

Mouse
Mouse is a pointing device and an input device. There are two buttons of a mouse. They are the Left mouse button and the Right mouse button. Some mice have a scroll wheel.

Joy stick
A joystick is also a pointing device which is used to move an object on the computer screen. We can turn it to 3600.

Scanner
Scanner is used for scanning text; images etc. there are two types of scanners. They are;
  1. Graphical scanners
  2. Text scanners

Web cameras
Web cameras are used to see images from the computer and these days they are used for video conferencing over the internet.

Digital camera
These are used to take photos. We can connect digital cameras directly to a computer and we can get the photos from it to the computer.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Central Processing Unit (CPU) is called a processing device. It is also called the microprocessor. CPU is the brain of the computer. It is the main hardware of a computer and all the processing is done inside.
Speed of the computer depends on its microprocessor. Like Dual Core, Pentium IV. They are mostly used these days. The Central Processing Unit divided into three parts. They are;

  1. Arithmetic and Logical Unit (ALU)
  2. Register
  3. Control unit (CU)

Arithmetic and Logical Unit handle all the mathematical calculations and logical operations of a computer. Like adding and multiplications. Registers are small memory used to store intermediate data, results and instructions while processing. The Control Unit controls the movements of data in the computer system.

The Mouse

Mouse is an input device. It has two halves to click. They are right side and the left side. There is a scroller in the mouse that is to roll the pages of the document. Mouse is also an important part of the computer. Mouse has its own jobs clicking, double clicking, dragging and dropping. However the mouse can not be used to enter data.

The Processor

This is called the brain of the computer. It is capable of receiving of data from the input devices and then process that data into information. The information is send out through output devices. To convert the data into information the processor is used. This also has the ability of storing information. This is responsible for controlling the various devices of the computer.

The major deference of the processor from the human brain is that it is incapable of independent and creative thoughts. The processor is also incapable of learning. To control the hardware in the computer the processor is important. There are many manufactures of processors. Intel and AMD are two examples.
